The NUG welcomes the new EU sanctions on 19 individuals and on the State Administration Council (SAC) itself. These new sanctions target individual members of the military, arms brokers, and business cronies such as Tay Za, Aung Moe Myint, Naing Htut Aung, and the SAC as an entity.
These new sanctions are significant as they will slow the military’s ability to restock and resupply for their systemic and criminal attacks on civilians, notably on children and IDPs. The military have no political legitimacy. In a desperate attempt to cling to power they use heavy weapons, artillery, and air strikes in many areas of the country, indiscriminately targeting civilian buildings and villages. Coordinated and targeted sanctions such as these are necessary to slow the military’s capacity and save lives.
We are grateful for the work of the EU in placing these important sanctions. We are also hopeful that further targeted sanctions will follow in particular cutting off the supply of aviation fuel. The junta is conducting airstrikes on the civilians, routinely targeting schools and hospitals, which are war crimes and crimes against humanity. They are responsible for massacres and mass displacement. The military must be cut off from the tools of their bloody trade. We once again request that all governments and the international community immediately place aggressive, targeted sanctions on the military regime and those who support and supply them.
Sincerely,
Dr. Sasa
