We are extremely saddened to hear of the tragic fire in Myanmar which left 5,000 Rohingya refugees homeless. Our deepest sympathies, prayers, and condolences go to our Rohingya brothers and sisters following this tragedy. The pain and suffering that our brothers and sisters have suffered at the hands of the military and their crimes against humanity, have been and continue to be beyond words.

Over 850,000 Rohingya live precariously as a direct result of the military crackdowns of 2016-18 which the United Nations concluded was conducted ‘with the military generals’ genocidal intent’. None of our Rohingya brothers and sisters would be in this situation had it not been for the military generals who carried out this atrocity and clear crime against humanity.

We have made ending human rights abuses against the Rohingya people, and the ending of their repression and discrimination against them cornerstones of our policy. We have reiterated our calls to the military to cease their targeted attacks and killings. We once again pledge that once the new constitution comes into force, the Rohingya people will enjoy the same rights, enshrined in the constitution, as all other citizens in accordance to the principles of Federal Democracy.

We urge the international community to include the Rohingya in all considerations of humanitarian assistance to the people of Myanmar, as they have been placed in some of the most extreme deprivation of any of our people and are among the most vulnerable. We support the ASEAN community and the UN Special Envoy in their efforts to resolve the ongoing conflict and bring a resolution to the plight of the Rohingya communities and families, and we urge all actors to redouble their efforts to bring the conflict to an end immediately, and minimize the senseless and needless loss of life and property.
