Condemns the murder of peaceful protestors in Yangon

Today, Sunday the 5th of December 2021, at around 8:00AM local time in Yangon of Myanmar, the world once again witnessed the horrific and barbaric attacks of the genocidal military’s forces against unarmed peaceful protestors on Pan Pin Gyi street, Kyi Myin Daing township, Yangon. Video clips filmed and shared at great personal risk by witnesses and bystanders show military forces not only using firearms to shoot protesters, but also driving military vehicles at full speed through crowds of protesters. As a result of these barbaric assaults on unarmed civilians, five people have been confirmed dead, and more were seriously injured. Unable to run for their lives, the injured were taken prisoner by the military. Their whereabouts and conditions are unknown at this time. The randomised nature of the attacks – killing and maiming indiscriminately, is no accident. The intention of the junta is clear: create as much fear and panic as possible. Inflict as much pain, trauma, and suffering as they can, without a care as to who their victims are. Reinforce the message that anyone at any time can be killed, arrested, beaten, or wounded, simply for being in the wrong place. Simply for daring to let their voices be heard, and take a symbolic stand against the savagery of the military dictatorship.

As the international community watches and waits, as they evaluate whether the NUG or the SAC has the better claim to legitimate governance of Myanmar, I ask “What more evidence do you need?” How much more proof will it take to convince the international community that the junta is not a legitimate government? The military does not serve or protect the people – they murder them without a second thought. They despise freedom so much, they have to kill or maim anyone who dares to protest for liberty. How much longer must the Myanmar people endure this brutality? How many times will the same pattern of the military committing atrocities and crimes against humanity play out before the international community takes action? How many more must be killed, in cold blood, on camera, before the international community steps up to bring the military generals to justice?

The free world is once again faced with the opportunity to prevent genocide. A chance to stop ongoing crimes against humanity. Will the world stand by silently? Will world leaders delay and equivocate? Will the international community wait for the military to exterminate the ethnic minorities? Will they wait for the military to murder, detain, torture, and terrorise the civilian population until they crawl under the military boot heel? Will they send thoughts and prayers as the military razes entire villages and town to the ground? The Myanmar military are the enemies of freedom and democracy. They are guilty of the highest crimes against humanity. The military’s depravity is not limited to the last 10 months. These same generals have been responsible for a litany of war crimes and crime against humanity targeting all of Myanmar, but in particular, targeting ethnic minorities, notably the Kachin, Karen, Chin, Kayah, Shan, Mon, Rakhine and Rohingya. The crimes are well documented. the perpetrators are well known. The evidence is here. The evidence has been before the international community for decades. As the military continues to execute the most extreme campaign of terror and destruction in its history, there can be no excuse to stand idly by. There can be no claim to ignorance.

We the people of Myanmar will never bow down in the face of genocidal military junta in Myanmar, we will not surrender, rest, or back down until we totally eradicate dictatorship, war crimes, and oppression from our land. Until justice is done and the monsters guilty of these heinous crimes are tried and sentenced. We will build a new, prosperous, peaceful, stable and free nation, the Federal Democratic Union where all the people of Myanmar regardless of race, religious, colour, culture, languages, ethnicities, gender and background can enjoy prosperity, peace, freedom, and equality before the law. This is our dream, and our promise. I fervently hope we can count on the support of the international community in this mission.

Sincerely,

H.E. Dr. Sasa
