Dr. Sasa’s Address to International Audience During Democracy Charter Promotion Event: “The Future of Federal Democratic Myanmar”

Respected Guests, Let me begin with a resounding message—Burma is triumphing in this revolution. We are prevailing for federal democracy, peace, and prosperity. We are not just winning for Myanmar; we are winning for the entire region and, indeed, for the world to forge a better future for all. Today, I share a truth I’ve come to learn: the people of Myanmar are winning, and the brutal junta is losing. They may have taken our elected representatives and leaders, and even executed pro-democracy leaders and activists, but our freedom is inevitable. I escaped Naypyitaw in the first week of February 2021, I count myself fortunate compared to my friends, including Mr. Mechha, my childhood friend, and father of seven, who was killed last month by brutal junta air strikes in Lailenpi Town, Chin State.

Mechha’s untold story mirrors thousands in Myanmar. Amidst this violence, we are winning:

In 2021, skeptics dismissed Myanmar’s brutal military junta as invincible after the attempted coup. Today, they anticipate its imminent collapse. I welcome you on this momentous occasion, hoping this event sheds light on the federal democratic future of Myanmar through the Federal Democracy Charter (FDC).

However, let’s not forget the suffering caused by the attempted coup—thousands dead, leaders imprisoned, tens of thousands of homes including places of worship, schools, and hospitals destroyed, and more than 2.5 million displaced. The consequences of the junta’s reign of terror against Myanmar are dire, with over 18 million people forced into hunger and more than 45 million below the poverty line.

Yet, amid the terror, the resilience of our people has been profound. With minimal international support, they have resisted the coup every day, showing extraordinary bravery in general strikes, the Civil Disobedient Movement (CDM), and a refusal to pay taxes. Ordinary citizens turned freedom fighters have faced brutal repression with heavy battlefield weapons and jet fighters.

After almost three years of relentless war, at long last, we are not here to discuss tactics or seek lethal aid. The brutal military, which shadowed Myanmar for three-quarters of a century, is mere months away from eradication—a national achievement brought about by the efforts of our valiant freedom fighters of whom the whole country is proud. Yet, victory marks the beginning of a formidable phase of recovery.

Our focus today is on the Federal Democracy Charter (FDC), a guiding document we intend to follow until a new federal democratic constitution is proposed. The FDC ensures diverse people have the chance to come together and craft a united, peaceful, and prosperous Myanmar, a beacon of hope for the region and the world.

The resilience of my people has been awe-inspiring. General strikes remain strong, CDM persists, and ordinary people have fought hard, selflessly sacrificing their lives. Through economic measures, boycotts, and international isolation, the brutal junta’s war machine is running out of money.

Alliance-building across ethnicities and coordinated efforts by resistance groups have cost the military generals dearly on the ground. National Unity has become the bedrock for Myanmar’s multiethnic, multicultural, and multi-religious fabric. The National Unity Government (NUG), National Unity Consultative Council (NUCC), and Committee Representing Pyitaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) actively propel the Myanmar Federal Democracy Roadmap. Our mission is a swift transition to a free, stable, peaceful, and prosperous federal democratic nation.

Now, the international community must embrace the democratic will of the people, supporting the end of this brutal reign of terror. Let’s build an inclusive federal democratic Myanmar for all.

In conclusion, friends of freedom, friends of Myanmar, friends of humanity, I invite you to join us in this victory. We ask for your continued financial, economic, and diplomatic pressure against the brutal junta in Myanmar, complete implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2669 of 2022, ASEAN five Points on Myanmar of 2021 and US NDAA Burma Act of 2023 and support for NUG and key stakeholders. Help us face the humanitarian emergency and aid in the reconstruction of our country. The people of Burma are struggling and dying for freedom, and we will not surrender. Stand with us, the free democratic world, and Burma together. Let’s make history.

Once again, thank you, sincerely,
Dr. Sasa
