Statement for International Workers’ Day (May Day)

Today, we celebrate International Workers’ Day, also known as Labor Day in most countries. Today is the day to celebrate laborers and the working classes for their efforts, their contributions, perseverance, and diligence.

Before the advent of democracy, the workers of Myanmar faced many difficulties such as low wages, long working hours, and unfair treatment. With democratic reforms they began to see benefits and improvements to their rights but sadly this era of progress of improvement only lasted a few years before the genocidal military generals in Myanmar staged their infamous coup dragged the plight of workers back to the pre-democratic age.

Myanmar’s economy was already hit hard during the covid 19 pandemic, and things were hard for laborers, but the situation is even more dire now with the genocidal military bringing unspeakable pain, suffering, death, destruction, an ever worsening humanitarian catastrophe, and imminent economic collapse.

The brave people of Myanmar should be celebrating this well-earned holiday in peace, but instead, they are forced to work against their will for the genocidal military generals, and those who refused to work for the junta have become targets, forced into hiding for fear of their lives.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank those workers who participated in Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) and stood firm against the genocidal military and refused to work under the terrorist dictatorship. In fact, peaceful acts of protest such as the CDM are much more powerful than the genocidal military’s acts of terrorism against the civilian’s population of Myanmar. Because of these heroes, the brave and courageous workers who participate in the CDM, our revolution has gained momentum and we are headed down the path of success. They are no more and no less than the heroes of peace and the vanguard of our freedoms and federal democracy for ALL the people of Myanmar.

We must continue on with our fight to true freedom and federal democracy, where a better tomorrow awaits for every one of us.

Thank you and Sincerely,

H.E. Dr. Sasa

Former Special Envoy to United Nations
