H. E. Igor Driesmans, a distinguished EU civil servant, and the EU’s ambassador to ASEAN has today been appointed Special Envoy for Myanmar. The MOIC and the people of Myanmar welcome this announcement with open arms. We are certain that Mr. Driesmans will bring his considerable experience and knowledge to bear on the ongoing crisis, and will work with ASEAN, the Myanmar people, and all relevant stakeholders to help bring the ongoing humanitarian and political disaster to a swift and definitive end.

As the military continues to rampage across the country, murdering and torturing civilians at will, it is imperative that the world take immediate and decisive action. We see the appointment of Mr. Driesmans as an indicator that the EU is more determined than ever to ramp up its existing operations to engage with the ongoing crisis, and work to establish a lasting and stable democracy in Myanmar. We look forward to Mr. Driesman’s contributions and hope to work closely with him to bring stability and peace to our nation.
