APPEAL to the security council regarding the ongoing crises in Myanmar

We are pleased to hear that the United Nations Security Council is meeting today to discuss the ongoing crises in Myanmar. The security situation has deteriorated drastically since the UNSC last met to discuss these issues. Villages are being burned, extrajudicial executions are frequent occurrences. Millions of our people are defenceless, without food, without shelter, and without access to medical care as COVID-19 continues to burn through the nation, with the junta fanning its flames. There is a clear responsibility for states to protect the lives and rights of Myanmar’s civilians from what is, ultimately, the world’s largest and best armed terrorist organisation. Every moment the international community does not take action to end the ongoing crisis, guarantees further death and destruction in our country. The Myanmar military have shown before their capacity and willingness to engage in genocide. If their supply lines are not severed, it is certain that they will once again carry out not one, but multiple simultaneous genocides in every corner of the country until only those they deem worthy remain alive. It is imperative that a global arms embargo be imposed on Myanmar and that the country be declared a no-fly zone until the military’s attempted seizure of power is ended, the guilty parties are brought to justice, order is restored, and the democratic will of the Myanmar people is enacted. All of Myanmar is calling on the security council, as the world’s foremost body for global peace and stability, to do the right thing, to take swift and decisive action, and ease the suffering of the Myanmar people and end this rogue military’s campaign of terror.

Sincerely,

H.E. Dr. Sasa
